Engineering Insurance

Engineering insurance is a specialized policy designed to cover a broad spectrum of risks connected to engineering operations. It offers extensive protection against risks associated with the installation, erection, and operation of any plant, machinery, or equipment. Since the engineering sector encompasses creation, design, construction, and building, the chances of accidents and hazards are elevated.

What is Engineering Insurance?

India is currently poised for substantial growth, resulting in a surge of developmental and infrastructure projects throughout the country. These initiatives comprise multiple stages, each facing various types of risks. Accidents or breakdowns during any of these stages can lead to significant financial losses and adversely impact businesses.
Engineering insurance offers financial protection for assets and revenue against a range of engineering-related risks. This insurance serves as a safety net against various dangers associated with activities like levelling work, excavation, structure erection, and the operation of machinery and equipment.
The engineering sector is deeply involved in the design and construction of buildings and structures, making it susceptible to serious accidents and hazards. In essence, an engineering insurance policy addresses different uncertainties linked to on-site construction, including the usage of plant and machinery.

Types of Engineering Insurance

In India, various types of engineering insurance policies are available. Here are some of the most common options:

Electronic Equipment Policy

This policy protects low-voltage devices and systems, including UPS units, computers, and stabilizers. It can also cover medical equipment like X-ray and ultrasound machines.

Boiler Pressure Plant Insurance Policy

This policy provides compensation to the policyholder in the event of unexpected physical loss or damage to any boiler or other pressurized machinery.

Machinery Breakdown Policy

This policy provides financial protection against sudden or unexpected damage to various equipment while in operation. Typically, it covers both external and internal damages.

Plant All Risk Insurance

This policy offers financial coverage for unforeseen damage to equipment during operation. It generally includes protection against both external and internal damage.

Erection All Risk

This plan covers the erection of plant and machinery structures, including activities such as installation, machinery testing, and commissioning.

Contractor’s All Risk Cover

This policy is designed to provide coverage for contractors, offering financial protection against losses or damages during the construction of projects.

Advance Loss of Profit Insurance Policy

This policy offers coverage for significant financial losses or expenses incurred due to delays in a construction or infrastructure project.

Contractor Plant and Machinery Insurance Policy

This insurance covers movable equipment and machinery, including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and similar items.

Machinery Loss of Profit Insurance Policy

This insurance protects against the costs of repairs and damage to machinery, helping to shield financial plans from potential losses in expected profits.

What Is Covered under Engineering Insurance?

  • Strike, Riot, and Malicious Act: This covers damage caused by labor strikes, riots, or malicious actions like vandalism or sabotage during construction or industrial operations.
  • Lightning, Fire, Aircraft Damage, Explosion: This includes damage caused by lightning strikes, fire (whether accidental or due to negligence), damage from aircraft, and explosions (either natural or industrial).
  • Inundation, Flood, Cyclone, Storm, and Allied Perils: Protection against water damage caused by floods, cyclones, or storms, including any other associated risks such as mudslides or tidal waves.
  • Subsidence, Landslide, and Rockslide: Insurance that covers the impact of natural movements in the ground, such as sinking (subsidence), landslides, or rockslides, which could damage structures.
  • Faults in an Erection: This refers to damage caused by defects or failures during the construction process or issues arising from improper erection of machinery, structures, or equipment.

What Is Not Covered under Engineering Insurance?

  • War or Invasion: Damage or loss resulting from acts of war, invasion, or civil unrest is generally excluded. Insurance usually does not cover damage from military actions, including armed conflict or foreign invasions.
  • Deductibles - Contributed by the Insured: This refers to the amount the insured party must pay out-of-pocket before the insurance coverage kicks in. The deductible is subtracted from any claims made. It's not covered by the policy.
  • Radioactive Contamination due to Nuclear Reactions: Any damage or loss resulting from nuclear incidents, including radioactive contamination, is excluded. This encompasses radiation from nuclear reactions, accidents at nuclear facilities, or nuclear fallout.
  • Willful Misconduct, Such as Planned Negligence: This excludes coverage for losses caused by deliberate actions, such as planned misconduct, fraud, or gross negligence. Insurance policies do not cover intentional acts that lead to damage or loss.
  • Poor Workmanship and Subpar Quality of Material: Losses caused by faulty or substandard workmanship, poor construction practices, or the use of low-quality materials are generally excluded. The policy is not responsible for compensating damage arising from these issues.
  • Discontinuation of Work: If work is stopped or suspended voluntarily or due to other non-insured reasons (such as labor disputes or business decisions), any resulting damage is typically not covered. The insurance does not cover losses from halted or abandoned projects.
  • Deterioration Caused by Oxidation and Wear and Tear: Deterioration due to normal aging processes, wear and tear (such as rust, corrosion, or decay), and other forms of natural degradation over time are excluded from coverage. Insurance is designed for unexpected or accidental damage, not routine wear.
  • Damage to Glass: Glass breakage is often excluded from engineering insurance unless specifically covered as a separate peril. Standard policies may not cover damage to glass, windows, or mirrors unless explicitly stated.
  • Shortage Caused by Disappearance or Other Factors: Losses due to inventory shortages, mysterious disappearances, or other unexplainable reasons (like theft without evidence of force) are generally excluded. Only theft with clear signs of forced entry or criminal activity may be covered.
  • Any Involved Party’s Failure to Meet Their Contractual Obligation: If any party involved in the project fails to meet their contractual obligations, such as non-performance or breach of contract, the insurance will not cover the resulting losses or damages.
  • Terrorism: Loss or damage resulting from acts of terrorism (deliberate attacks, bombings, sabotage, etc.) is typically excluded unless the policy specifically includes terrorism coverage or is a special policy with a higher premium.
  • Loss of Drawings, Files, or Financial Instruments (like Cash, Cheques, etc.): Losses or damage to intangible assets such as drawings, files, documents, and financial instruments like cash or cheques are usually excluded. Physical assets are covered, but documents or digital files might not be.
  • Defective Design: Damage resulting from design flaws, whether in structural, mechanical, or electrical systems, is generally excluded. The liability for poor or faulty designs typically lies with the designer or engineer, not the insurance provider.
